MOUNTAIN

April 2025 · Dzongri, India · Goechala, India

High above Goechala and Dzongri, the light only visits what it cannot break. Stone waits in the cold, and the clouds refuse to lift.

The cold here does not ask for permission to stay. It settles into the wool of a sleeve and the marrow of a wrist, turning the breath to grey smoke before it even leaves the mouth. Standing on these ridges above Dzongri, weight means nothing against the wind that tears across the ice fields.

A camera grows heavy against the chest when the air is thin enough to make the lungs ache for salt. The light finds the edge of a frozen tooth and stops there, refusing to spill into the dark hollows below Goechala. It leaves the vast blue slopes untouched, carving the stone into absolute shapes that need no witness.

There is an old silence in the high passes where the vapour pools like wool left in the rain. To wait there is to learn how little the world cares for being seen. The sun touches a single crest for a heartbeat, and the rest belongs to the shadow.
